World Radio Day in History:

World Radio Day seeks to rejoice the significance of the radio in improving international cooperation, providing access to information and supporting free speech. The day also serves to promote the radio as a means of announcing in times of need and emergency. Radios are still the most readily available media that can publicize information to reach the widest and most assorted audiences in the shortest amount of time. 

The idea of the World Radio Day was first proposed by Spain's Radio Academy in 2010. FM100 Radio joins this movement with the Spanish Academy in 2011.  The following year, in 2011, UNESCO declared the first World Radio Day. Since then, World Radio Day has been celebrated annually on February 13th, a day chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the United Nations Radio, the UN's international broadcasting service, which was established on February 13th, 1946.

  

History (FM100 Pakistan)                       

FM100 Radio was established in the year 1994 and started broadcasting its regular transmission from March 23, 1995, it is the first radio channel in Pakistan providing live infotainment programs round the clock and promoting Pakistan music among the population, regular programs includes Urdu pop, Panjabi and Western Music for the younger generation, latest films hits for housewives, Ghazals& folk songs for listeners of all ages. FM 100 broadcasts Talkshows to educate and create awareness among masses about social and development issues.  FM100 has gained immense popularity in a short span of time in the major cities of Pakistan i.e. Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi/Islamabad as it provides services in these cities. It has played a vital role in bringing about a change in their entertainment pattern, but still needs some time and efforts to immensely affect the radio listening habits of people. In Pakistan, the music played the dialogue and language used by the Djs, the discussion between callers and show hosts and the entire package and style of FM100 shows of a new generation of Pakistan.

Celebrate World Radio Day

Each year FM100 Pakistan celebrates World Radio Day on 13th Feb and arrange various activities, live Quiz, PSAs, PMSs, competitions and talk shows for radio listeners. FM100 invites guest speakers of UN in Pakistan, International broadcasters, Diplomatic Missions in Pakistan, National& International Development sector around the world to share their views and experiences about Radio and its importance.

About World Radio Day

Regardless of being over 100 years old, the radio is one of the most popular ways to exchange information, provide social interchange, and educate people all over the world. It has been used to help people, including youth, to engage in discussions on topics that affect them. It can save lives during natural or human-made disasters, and it gives journalists a platform to report facts and tell their stories. The first World Radio Day was officially celebrated in 2012. FM100 celebrated  world radio day with international communities on 13th Feb 2012 and broadcast 1st 02 hours LIVE Talk Show to promote the importance of radio in our lives. Since then, FM100 celebrating and broadcasting special contents related to World Radio Day.

This year 2018, FM100 launched online photography completion “RADIO FACE” to engage photographers to take part in the completion, submit photographs which show the importance of radio and win prizes.

Special 02 hours LIVE Talk Show “Radio & Sports” will be on air on 13th Feb 2018,  national & international speakers and Sports personalities will be the part of upcoming Talks Show.    

 

World Radio Day 2018 will spotlight on the following sub-themes:

  • Diversity in Sports Coverage: ​Through the coverage of traditional and grassroots games, radio can reconnect people with their cultural heritage, promoting freedom of expression and diversity through cultural expression;
  • Gender Equality in Sports Coverage: Sports coverage is hugely powerful in shaping norms and stereotypes about gender. Radio has the ability to challenge these norms, promoting a balanced coverage of men's and women's sports and a fair portrayal of sportspeople irrespective of gender;
  • Peace and Development through Sports Coverage: Through greater coverage of sports for peace and development iniatives, the universal values of non-violence, solidarity and tolerance are recognized and celebrated.
