Durefishan Saleem isn’t keen on love marriage, thinks it lacks excitement

In a recent appearance on a Nida Yasir’s morning show, television star Durefishan Saleem delivered her verdict on love marriages vs arranged marriages. In the eyes of the Ishq Murshid actor, it is arranged marriages for the win all the way.

“In love marriages, there is no element of wooing at all,” declared the showbiz star, who firmly believes that arranged marriages hold a well of surprises for a couple as they embark on their journey together. According to Durefishan, any man pursuing a love marriage stops putting in the effort as soon as the wedding is over. “The guy never takes it seriously, because he just tells himself, ‘I’ve got her now.’”

Continuing in the same vein, Durefishan remarked that with both parties having got to know each other deeply during their courtship, there is usually very little left to uncover by the time they have reached their wedding. In a society that holds up love marriages as a frisson of excitement when juxtaposed with a more traditional set-up, Durefishan turned things around by pointing out that it was love marriages, in fact, that were anticlimactic.

“[If you are in a love marriage], you know each other so well that there is nothing left to discover about the other person!” she claimed. “There is just no excitement in there at all!”

When not commenting on the deplorable dullness of love marriages on national television, Durefishan enjoys a packed acting calendar. Daughter of producer and director Saleem ul Hassan, Durefishan moved from Lahore to Karachi to begin her acting career. After her debut in Dil Ruba with a supporting role, Durefishan went on to appear in the dramas Pardes and Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi, among others. Most recently, Durefishan bagged a lead role in Ishq Murshid, where she plays Shibra, a headstrong, intelligent girl who cherishes family values. Ishq Murshid began airing in October 2023, and the final episode of the show is slated to premiere in theatres on May 3 before airing on television two days later.
